WILSON SONS WINS THE DUPONT PRIZE WITH THE BEST HEALTH MANEGEMENT AND SAFETY PROJECT
The WS+ Health, Environment and Security project won the 2012 DuPont prize. Implanted since 2011 at Guarujá Shipyard, the program was judged by an independent evaluation commission formed by leaders and researchers from SMS area and Ministry of Employment’s representors. Among the main candidates this year there are Petrobras, Danone, TAM and Angelo American.
WS + aims to create a safety culture in the company with DuPont’s consulting, wich is internationally recognized for its work in the area. Its application in Guaruja Shipyard began as a pilot project and after its conclusion in November, became the model and is now being expanded to other business areas of Wilson Sons. The director of the unit on the coast, Adalberto Souza, celebrated the achievement: "We are driven by challenges. This award is the result of the collective effort of our team. The Shipyard has really been through major changes. "
The results are impressive. In just over a year and a half, reducing the frequency rate of typical accidents was 60% in the Shipyard. "If before we identified one considered security deviation attitude every two people, today this rate is one for every 17 employees. This demonstrates a new culture and behavior change in the company", explains John David Santos, corporate manager of SMS Wilson Sons.
The creation of Safe Practice Index (IPS), which consists in observing the level of adherence of people to SMS procedures and good practices, became available to see these improvements in the level of participation in the Shipyard. The first indicator for May 2011 indicated that 44% of those observed in the field were not adherent to SMS standards. Since the value raised in October 2012 pointed to a 95% ratio, an improvement of 115% over the first result.
"The main foundations we emphasize are recognition of all the responsibilities in SMS, discipline in comply the rules, the engagement of the leadership and deviations management. In a company with about 7,000 employees, the incorporation of this culture for everyone is essential because they will be their own supervisors on a daily basis", says Aléa Steinle, Organizational Development Director of the Wilson Sons Group.
According to Sustainable Solutions director to South America, Denise Grun, at the time of project design, DuPont also proposed greater involvement of the company's leadership in the SMS business. "If the board is not involved won’t be possible to make necessary changes". This differential to Grun is largely responsible for the high level of engagement in the project. "The company soon realizes the advantages for business as SMS leverages the organization and productivity".
This year, the WS + was extended to three Group businesses (Tugs, Tecon Rio Grande and EADI Santo André). It was also created an Executive Committee SMS composed of senior management of the company. The proposal is to implement the project in all units of the Wilson Sons until the first semester of 2014. In the Shipyard Guaruja, the continuity of the project will be through continuous monitoring and cycles of critical analysis every three months.
